Major skilled visa changes announced

Following much anticipation, Home Affairs Minister, Clare O'Neil, recently announced a number of major changes to the skilled visa system. Highly compensated skilled professionals will have an easier time entering and working in Australia as a result of most of the changes.

Among the announcements were:

  • The introduction of three tiers of temporary skilled migration, changes to minimum wages for skilled visa holders (TSMIT), the removal of Labour Market Testing (LMT), and the removal of the Skilled Occupation List (SOL)
  • Permanent residency should be available to all temporary skilled visa holders
  • Increasing mobility for employers sponsoring visas
  • Sponsorship costs to be paid monthly by employers
  • A new system of skilled migration points testing is needed
