NCVER's Apprentices and Trainees 2022: September Quarter Report Provides a Comprehensive Overview of the Vocational Education and Training Landscape in Australia

The National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER) recently released the Apprentices and Trainees 2022: September Quarter report, which provides a snapshot of the apprenticeships and traineeships across Australia. The report presents statistics on commencements, completions, cancellations, and withdrawals, as well as those currently in training.

In-training figures, which represent the number of active contracts at a given point in time, increased by 14.0% from September 2021, with 402,245 apprentices and trainees in training as of September 30, 2022. The report notes that the COVID-19 pandemic has created uncertain times for individuals, businesses, and governments, which have affected apprentice and trainee numbers, and care should be taken when comparing 2020 and 2022 data with data from previous years.

In the September quarter of 2022, commencements decreased by 41.3%, to 29,420, while completions increased by 33.4%, to 24,655, and cancellations and withdrawals increased by 28.1%, to 32,950. However, in the 12 months ending September 30, 2022, compared with the 12 months ending September 30, 2021, commencements increased by 6.1%, to 254,700, completions increased by 20.9%, to 95,300, and cancellations and withdrawals increased by 34.3%, to 127,510.

The report is compiled under the Australian Vocational Education and Training Management Information Statistical Standard (AVETMISS) for Apprentice and Trainee Collection Specifications, Release 7.0, October 2015. The estimation method involves weighting recently processed numbers based on average reporting lags, and as estimates are revised for up to seven quarters, figures for the last two years may differ from those published in earlier or subsequent reports. The final counts are those submitted by jurisdictions.

Overall, the Apprentices and Trainees 2022: September Quarter report provides a comprehensive overview of the vocational education and training landscape in Australia. It highlights the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on apprentice and trainee numbers and provides valuable insights into the trends and changes in vocational education and training across the country. This report will be useful for policymakers, educators, and other stakeholders in the vocational education and training sector as they work to support apprentices and trainees in Australia.
