ASQA Shifts Communication Strategy: What it Means for the VET Sector

The Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) has recently disclosed modifications to its information dissemination strategy, which, although pitched as a move towards enhancing transparency, appears to be curbing the extent of publicly accessible data. Beginning in October, certain monthly information releases are designated for providers exclusively, thereby diminishing the scope of publicly shared insights regarding its anticipations within the Vocational Education and Training (VET) sector.

ASQA unveils a reconfiguration of the 'ASQA Update' to a quarterly newsletter from its previous monthly schedule. This alteration aims to encapsulate significant updates about ASQA's endeavours and regulatory practices and evolving trends and transformations affecting the VET sector. The quarterly newsletters are seen as a method of informing stakeholders about overarching developments and decisions.

In addition, a new monthly communication named 'Provider Lens' is being introduced to fill the information void left by the 'ASQA Update.' 'Provider Lens' is engineered to furnish providers with tailored information and guidance concerning their obligations and avenues for continuous improvement. This initiative is perceived as a channel for more targeted and provider-centric communication, ensuring that VET providers are well-versed and compliant with regulatory expectations.

The transition phase commences with the October edition being the concluding monthly 'ASQA Update' and the inception of the 'Provider Lens' scheduled for November 2023. Consequently, the subsequent 'ASQA Update' is set for release in January 2024. This shift in communication strategy signifies ASQA's attempt to bifurcate its communication into a more generalised and a more specialised stream, addressing the broader VET sector and individual providers, respectively.

The unfolding scenario propels a discourse on the balance between transparency and targeted communication. While the new strategy may bolster provider compliance and understanding, concerns linger regarding the diminished public access to information that was hitherto available. This raises questions about the inclusivity and comprehensiveness of ASQA’s communication approach and how it aligns with the broader goal of fostering transparency within the VET sector.

Moreover, stakeholders within the VET sector may find it beneficial to stay updated with the quarterly ASQA Update' and monthly 'Provider Lens' to navigate the evolving regulatory landscape adeptly.
