As of 2024, a total of 1,335,878 Indian students are pursuing their higher education in various countries around the world. This marks an increase from 1,318,955 students in 2023, indicating a growing trend of Indian students seeking educational opportunities overseas.

- Canada: 427,000 students
- United States: 337,630 students
- United Kingdom: 185,000 students

Canada
Canada remains the top destination for Indian students, with 427,000 students enrolled in 2024. Although there is a slight decrease from 427,085 students in 2023, Canada continues to attract a significant number of Indian students due to its quality education system and favorable immigration policies.
United States
The United States is the second most popular destination, with 337,630 Indian students. The US continues to be a preferred choice due to its prestigious universities and diverse academic programs.
United Kingdom
The United Kingdom saw 185,000 Indian students enrolling in its universities. The UK’s high-ranking institutions and opportunities for post-study work visas make it an attractive destination for Indian students.
Australia
Australia hosted 122,202 Indian students in 2024. The country is known for its strong focus on research and innovation, making it a popular choice among students seeking quality higher education.
Germany
Germany, with 42,997 Indian students, is favored for its excellent technical and engineering programs. The country’s emphasis on providing education at a relatively lower cost compared to other Western countries also contributes to its popularity.
Government Engagement and Support
Indian Missions and Posts abroad actively engage with Indian students studying overseas. They encourage students to register with them or on the Global Rishta Portal and organise "Welcome Ceremonies" to brief them on security issues in host countries. This engagement helps collect data on Indian students abroad and ensures their well-being.
Trends and Changes Over the Years
The number of Indian students studying abroad has fluctuated over the years. In 2019, 675,541 students moved abroad for higher studies. This number dipped in 2022 to 907,404 students, likely due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the numbers rebounded significantly in 2021, with 1,158,702 students enrolling in universities abroad.
Decrease in Students Opting for Russia and Ukraine
The data also shows a decrease in Indian students opting for higher studies in Russia and Ukraine. In 2024, 24,940 students chose Russia, and 2,510 chose Ukraine, compared to 23,515 students in Ukraine in 2022. This decline could be attributed to ongoing geopolitical tensions and safety concerns in these regions.
The latest data from the MEA underscores the significant presence of Indian students in international education. Canada, the US, the UK, Australia, and Germany remain the top destinations, reflecting the diverse opportunities and high-quality education these countries offer. As the number of Indian students pursuing higher education abroad continues to rise, the role of Indian Missions in supporting and engaging with these students becomes increasingly important. This trend not only highlights the global mobility of Indian students but also underscores the importance of maintaining robust international educational partnerships.
